A modified classic, our second cocktail takes inspiration from the ‘whiskey smash’ that perfectly combines lemon and mint for a refreshing treat. Traditionally served short, we decided to add in cream soda to both sweeten and lengthen, whilst also adding in some fresh ginger that gives the drink a spicy twist.

The original recipe was developed as a 19th century cooler and later adapted by legendary bartender Dale DeGroff who calls the citrus and mint combination the perfect cocktail for those who say they’ll never drink whisk(e)y. So, we thought it would be fitting to name our take the Non-Standard, since it’s a way for the non-whisky fans amongst us to ease themselves into the world of whisky.

Ingredients

  1. Double Standard - 50ml
  2. Ginger - thumb
  3. Lemon juice - 15ml
  4. Cream soda - 100ml

To Garnish

  1. Mint sprig

Method

  1. Muddle the ginger in a cocktail tin then add the whisky and lemon juice. Fill with ice and shake until well chilled (about 15s). Double strain into an ice filled high ball and pour the cream soda down the side of the glass. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
